A former Syracuse University student died Thursday in the comfort of his immediate family at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, according to an obituary on The Post-Standard’s website.

Matthew Murphy, 19, of Manlius, completed his freshman year at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications as a broadcast and digital journalism major, according to the obituary. The cause of death is not known.

Thomas Wolfe, the senior vice president and dean of student affairs at SU, said the school is currently in the process of reaching out to the Murphy family. Wolfe said Murphy was not enrolled in classes at SU this semester and did not provide further comment at the time.

Murphy graduated with honors from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 2010 and was the recipient of the Triple ‘C’ Award for Character, Courage and Commitment from New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, according to the obituary.

Murphy worked at Cavalry Golf Club in Manlius as a bag room staffer and pro shop attendant for four years and was the owner and operator of Matt Murphy Designs, according to the obituary. He was also a Eucharistic minister and a member of St. Ann’s Parish in Manlius.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville, according to the obituary. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in DeWitt. Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the church, located at 400 Salt Springs St.
