University Union : Members plan for February concert in Carrier Dome

University Union will host its first-ever ‘Rock the Dome’ concert on Feb. 2  in the Carrier Dome. It’s an event UU hopes will reoccur yearly, said Rob Dekker, UU president.

‘I’m tremendously excited about this,’ Dekker said. ‘It’s another step in the direction of increasing programming and creating great events for students.’

Further details about the event and its artist lineup have not been fully confirmed, but students can expect an official announcement in a few weeks, Dekker said. One of the artists for the show has been secured and ‘Rock the Dome’ will have two to three acts, he said.

Though the show takes place on a Thursday night, it was the best option given Dome availability and a preferred February date, Dekker said. Additionally, Dekker said UU did not want to overlap with sorority rush, which begins Feb. 3.

‘Rock the Dome’ will be comparable to Block Party in terms of production, artists and capacity, said Binta Jammeh, PR director for UU.

The show is made possible through the additional funding UU received from Student Association in October, Dekker said. The bill stipulated the extra money be designated for large-scale programming, allowing UU to create the event.

Adding a Carrier Dome show to the UU lineup has continually been discussed, Dekker said, but both the SA grant as well as becoming the official programming board enabled it to come to fruition.

‘As long as I’ve been in UU it’s always been something we talked about,’ Dekker said. ‘We’ve always been partial to opportunities to do more Dome shows.’

UU took into consideration the most recent survey results distributed by the organization, Dekker said. The secured act for ‘Rock the Dome’ appeared on the survey and ‘did very well,’ he said.

‘Details will come as we have them,’ Dekker said. ‘We’re hoping we can tell students as soon as possible.’
