Syracuse assistant Hopkins interviews for USC head coaching vacancy, according to report

The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that Syracuse assistant coach Mike Hopkins interviewed for the Southern California head coaching position.

Hopkins, a Los Angeles native, has been on the coaching staff at Syracuse since 1995. He played for Jim Boeheim from 1989 to 1993, and is now the Orange’s head coach in waiting.

His name has been connected to several openings in recent years. UNC-Charlotte reportedly extended an offer to be the 49ers head coach in 2010, but Hopkins withdrew his name from consideration.

The Trojans are looking for a new head coach after they fired Kevin O’Neill in January. According to the report, USC athletic director Pat Haden met with former Trojans head coach Tim Floyd for the position. Floyd was the Trojans’ head coach from 2006 to 2009, when he resigned amid NCAA violation allegations.
