Syracuse throttles Ryerson in exhibition match

Syracuse continued its exhibition season on Tuesday night with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Ryerson University (Toronto, Ont.) Rams. Six different players scored for the Orange, and goalkeepers Alex Bono and Andrew Coughlin combined to allow just one goal.

SU sophomore midfielder Stefanos Stamoulacatos scored less than three minutes into the match to give the home team an early lead. The goal was Stamoulacatos’ second of the exhibition season.

The Orange continued the pressure. In the 15th minute, freshman forward Emil Ekblom’s shot hit the crossbar, but midfielder Chris Nanco jumped on the rebound and kicked it in.

Syracuse had a 2-0 lead at halftime when Bono was replaced by Coughlin.

Redshirt sophomore Trevor Alexander started the Orange’s goal scoring in the second half. The defender Alexander scored in the 56th minute, extending the lead to 3-0.



Ryerson’s Mihalo Mihosovich scored the Rams’ only goal of the night in the 72nd minute.

Syracuse’s Alex Halis scored in the 79th minute off a pass from Nanco, his former high school teammate. The midfielder corralled a pass from Nanco and sent a shot into the top left corner of the net. The goal increased SU’s lead to 4-1.

In the final five minutes of the match, SU scored two more times to seal the win. In the 86th minute, sophomore forward Noah Rhynhart scored on a penalty kick to make it 5-1. A minute later, sophomore forward Ben Ramin scored to push the lead to 6-1.

With the victory, the Orange improved to 2-0 in the exhibition season.Syracuse will conclude its exhibition schedule on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 3:30 p.m. at Georgetown. SU’s regular season opener is Friday, Aug. 30, at Colgate.
