No. 25 Syracuse (14-4, 6-4 Atlantic Coast) ended its three-match winning streak with a 4-2 loss to No. 19 Florida State (13-7, 5-5 ACC) on Friday evening. Playing outdoors for just the second time this season, the Orange lost the doubles point and attempted to mount a comeback in singles, ultimately falling short to drop to sixth in the ACC standings.
Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez, the No. 12 doubles pairing in the nation, continued their winning streak at first doubles with a 6-4 win. However, it was not enough to secure the doubles point for SU after Sofya Golubovskaya and Anna Shkudun lost 6-4 at second doubles to go along with an SU loss at third singles. Golubovskaya and Shkudun trailed 5-2 and rallied back into the set but could not complete the comeback.
In singles, No. 10 Knutson picked up an easy victory at first singles over No. 24 Carla Touly. Knutson rolled through the first set, 6-0 before Touly retired due to injury. At second singles, Ramirez drew a tough opponent in No. 109 Petra Hule. Hule defeated Ramirez 6-2, 6-3 to put the Seminoles up 2-1.
Shkudun bounced back after a close loss last weekend in singles with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth singles to level the match at 2-all. With the match tied, SU needed to turn around two of the three matches that it had already lost the first set in.
Golubovskaya was unable to turn her match, losing 6-4, 6-3, to put the Orange up against the brink of defeat. Fifth singles Dina Hegab was on her way to forcing a deciding third set, up 5-3 in the third, when Florida State clinched the match. Andrea Garcia won the final two games of the second set in sixth singles over Libi Mesh, winning 6-1, 7-5 to secure the win for the Seminoles.
Hegab’s match was not finished, likely to rest both players before upcoming matches on Sunday.
SU’s road matches will continue with a trip down to No. 18 Miami, where the Orange will take on the Hurricanes on Sunday at 11 a.m.
