Racist graffiti targeting Asian people was found in a Syracuse University residence hall, the Department of Public Safety announced in a Thursday night email.

Graffiti that “maligns the Asian community” was discovered on the third floor of Day Hall, per the email, sent right after 11:30 p.m. The graffiti comes after four hate crimes were reported in eight days at SU — two of which were already in Day.

Currently, DPS is speaking with residents and canvassing the floor. No other details on the incident are available at the time, according to the email.

Racial slurs against black and Asian people were found on the fourth and sixth floors of Day last week. Ceiling lights in bathrooms on Day’s sixth floor were pulled out and put in a toilet. The N-word was written on part of the light, at least one mirror on the floor and garbage cans. A slur against Asian people was also written on a bulletin board on the fourth floor.

Starting at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday students began at sit-in at the Barnes Center at The Arch, protesting the graffiti and the university’s response to it. The protest is ongoing.

Graffiti using racist language against Asian people was reported in the Physics Building Wednesday night. DPS is currently investigating the graffiti as a bias incident. On Thursday, a swastika was drawn in the snow on the side of 505 Walnut, a luxury apartment where many students live. SPD is currently investigating that case.
