Syracuse (24-15, 6-9 Atlantic Coast) first baseman Faith Cain’s perfect day at the plate led the Orange to a 7-3 road victory Saturday afternoon against Pittsburgh (21-19, 4-14).
Cain batted 4-for-4 with two doubles, two singles, and three RBIs. Five different Syracuse players had multi-hit days to help lead SU to 15 hits as opposed to Pittsburgh’s three. Syracuse’s shortstop and leadoff hitter, Sammy Fernandez, finished 3-5 at the plate with a run scored and one RBI.
Alexa Romero dominated the Panthers from the circle. After a 12-strikeout performance in game one of Friday’s double-header, Romero tossed seven innings of three-hit softball, giving up three runs, only two earned. The freshman left-hander moved to 10-6 and has proven herself to be the Orange’s most reliable pitcher this season.
With the win this Saturday, Syracuse swept its first three-game series of the season and won the three games by a combined total of 23-4.
The Orange have two double-headers this upcoming week. On Tuesday SU will host Niagara at SU Softball Stadium. On Wednesday the team will travel to Siena for another in-state matchup before hosting North Carolina next weekend.
