Two days before Syracuse played Georgia Tech, Syracuse head coach Shannon Doepking was discontent with the Orange’s ability to score runs. SU had only scored a pair of runs in its prior two Atlantic Coast Conference games.

“We’re not scoring a ton of runs right now,” Doepking said, “I hope that will change in the future.”

Today, SU (20-26, 8-11 ACC) totaled four runs against Georgia Tech (28-23, 9-10), but fell short, 5-4. In the fifth inning, senior Hannah Dossett doubled home two runs to tie the score. Yet, that proved meaningless when Georgia Tech sophomore Skye Webb singled home the winning run.

SU sophomore Lailoni Mayfield fired a solo home run in the second, but Georgia Tech answered later that inning. The Yellow Jackets scored three runs with two outs, taking a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish until the Dossett double.

Syracuse struck back in the third inning when senior Alicia Hansen homered for the second time this season. But later that inning, Syracuse junior Alexa Romero allowed another run when Georgia Tech sophomore Tricia Awald knocked a home run of her own. Romero, who had a 2.96 ERA entering the day, allowed five earned runs in 6.2 innings.

The fifth Yellow Jacket run came in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Romero had an opportunity to send it to extra innings, but Webb’s walk-off single ended the game.

Syracuse and Georgia Tech will play again on April 27 at 1 p.m.
