Syracuse to spend week of training camp at Fort Drum
The Syracuse football team will hold its preseason camp at Fort Drum beginning Aug. 12, according to an SU athletics press release Sunday.
Working with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, SU will implement elements of military training into its training camp. The Orange will conduct meetings in an army battalion headquarters, eat in an army dining facility and sleep in soldier barracks, according to the release. The team will also go through army physical training and small unit leadership seminars.
“We appreciate the opportunity to incorporate the unique leadership and team building exercises into our program,” SU head coach Doug Marrone said in the release. “Our philosophy is to develop the person and then the athlete.
“This environment will greatly aid in the growth of our young men and further our valuable relationship with Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division.”
SU will finish its week of camp at Fort Drum with a scrimmage in front of the soldiers and their families Aug. 18.
The Syracuse football and men’s basketball teams have visited Fort Drum in the past as part of the partnership between the athletic programs and military base, which has a population of more than 19,000 active military personnel, according to the release.
“The Syracuse Orange football team coming to Fort Drum is another great example of the strong relationship between the New York communities and the 10th Mountain Division,” said Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley, 10th Mountain Division commander. “This preseason camp will serve to strengthen the bond between us and the members of this great area.”
