SPD arrests man on Ackerman Avenue for burglaries

A man was arrested Saturday on Ackerman Avenue for burglary after a 911 caller tipped off Syracuse police about a suspicious person in a neighbor’s backyard.

Kenneth Mason, 36, of DeWitt, N.Y., was arrested on two counts of burglary in the second degree — a felony. He was also charged with two counts of misdemeanor criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree; two counts of misdemeanor petty larceny; and the violation of unlawful possession of marijuana.

The 911 caller said the man had a box of electronics and clothing, police said. When police arrived at about 10 a.m. on the 800 block of Ackerman Avenue, they found and arrested Mason, who matched the man’s description.

Sgt. Gary Bulinski of the Syracuse Police Department said Mason was found with items from two burglaries he’s believed to have committed in the area.

Bulinski said it’s not known whether Mason was coming down to the area to target Syracuse University students on Ackerman Avenue.

There’s also no indication at this time Mason was working with anyone else, Bulinski said.

Mason was taken to the Onondaga County Justice Center and is set to be arraigned on Sunday.
