Staats moves to first-line attack, replacing senior Maltz

On Saturday against Maryland, Syracuse head coach John Desko shuffled his attack rotation. Instead of the normal starting trio of Kevin Rice, Dylan Donahue and Derek Maltz, Desko inserted Randy Staats on the first attack unit.

“Randy had been playing well and he’s a terrific player,” Desko said. “He’s got good vision. He can dodge. He finishes well, and you know, I think the whole team saw that he needed to be out there as much as he can.”

In just his third game as a Division I player, the Onondaga Community College transfer recorded a goal and an assist on four shots.

As a result, Maltz moved back to a second attack unit with Nicky Galasso and Jordan Evans.

“Derek’s a great player too, and we’ve got to get him on the field,” Desko said. “We decided to move him in with the second group for some good off-ball movement. And, had we had the ball more, you would have seen more of a mix on attack, too.”
